HARTLAND,
MICHIGAN--An organization representing amputee firefighters announced plans
Wednesday to file a $100 million lawsuit against a Michigan fire department
over claims that it discriminated against a former firefighter who wears a
prosthetic leg.
The Amputee Firefighter Association's board of directors voted to sue
the Hartland-Deerfield Fire Authority, alleging that it has failed to respond
to David Dunville's requests to test for his old on-call firefighter job,
according to the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.
Dunville, whose lower left leg was amputated after he shattered it in a
fall at the fire station in 1999, is the national president of the
organization. He now wears a prosthetic leg that is specifically designed to
carry the additional weight of a firefighter's gear.
Dunville claims that his requests have been ignored by the fire chief --
a claim the chief denies.
The board said that it is considering filing complaints with the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission under the 1990 Americans with Disabilities
Act.
