Mayor Calls For Inclusive Neighborhood Schools

SOFIA, BULGARIA--The mayor of Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, has launched an initiative designed to help children with disabilities to be fully included in schools near their homes.

Mayor Boyko Borissov initiated the project, called "Integrated Teaching of Children in Public Schools -- Going to School Together", on Tuesday, according to the Sofia Weekly news service.

The project was created to make sure every neighborhood in the city of 1.2 million people has at least one school that is accessible to students with disabilities, so they can learn with their peers.

The costs, expected to be about 200,000 Bulgarian Lev ($132,000 US), will be provided through a special city privatization fund.
