Woman Sues Portland Suburb Over Access Problems

VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON--A Vancouver woman is suing the city, accusing it of discriminating against her and other people with disabilities.

The Seattle Times reported Friday that the national civil rights group Access Now is representing Michelle Beardshear, 26, in her claims that the city, located across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon violated Washington state discrimination laws, along with the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act.

In the suit, Beardshear, who is paraplegic and uses a wheelchair, reportedly claimed that city properties such as City Hall, Police Department, public libraries and city parks are not adequately accessible, and that the city has failed to include such accessibility features as curb ramps, parking spaces, and restroom grab bars.
