| Education | MS – Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison (1985); BS – Social Studies/Political Science from UW-Madison (1980). I earned two years of doctoral credits at the Univ. of St. Thomas prior to my sons being diagnosed with Autism. |
| Interest in developmental disabilities | I am a Rehabilitation Counselor by profession and specialize in private sector rehabilitation. This occasionally includes clients with developmental disabilities. However, my heightened interest in developmental disabilities comes from having three sons with autism spectrum disorder. The oldest is 21 years of age with Aspergers and attends Coe College. My other two, 18 years old, are fraternal twins with varying degrees of autism. One has mild autism and ADHD. The other has diagnoses of severe autism. |
| Experience in developmental disabilities | In addition to a master's degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison, I am a Rehabilitation Counselor and Certified Case Manager. Master's degree preparation included work at the University of Wisconsin Waisman Center on Mental Retardation at a simulated sheltered workshop. I also have over 25 years of experience in MN workers compensation rehabilitation including clients with developmental disabilities. I served as membership chair, on the ethics committee, and as chair of the MN Association of Rehabilitation Providers (1992). But my most intensive and personal experience with Developmental Disabilities has come as the father of three sons in the autism spectrum. I discontinued Doctoral Studies in Psychology to advocate for my children. Following graduation from Partners in Policymaking, I served on a variety of boards and committees including Unlocking Autism, The Hennepin County Children's Mental Health Collaborative, The Robbinsdale Area Schools Special Education Advisory Council, and have been a member of other, similar or related organizations. As part of my divorce in 2004, I got full physical and legal custody of my twins with more severe autism and half the parenting time with my oldest son with Aspergers. I now am sole guardian of my twins as they transition into adulthood. I got remarried in 2010 to Anne, an Allina Pharmacist. |
